Money and Mobility: For Military Personnel and Families
PCS Moves: Before and After |
|
Active duty military personnel make Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves
about every two to four years. To prepare for a life of moves, you need to know
what to expect both before and after a move. That means asking a lot of questions
and doing some research. Then, you need to plan accordingly and set aside funds
specifically for making a move.
How Often Will I Move?
In general, you can expect to move about every three yearswhich gives you time
to save between relocations. Still, there may be times in a military career when
moves happen almost every year. That’s why it’s wise to start planning for the next
move shortly after you’ve unpacked from your last move. This will keep you
prepared for deployments or “PCS surprises.”
Branch Housing Services
Each branch of service provides information about its installations, and includes
floor plans, photo tours, policies and procedures, and programs and services.
Anticipating your next move is important because when your orders do arrive, you
may have only a few weeks before your departure. You’ll lower your stress level
and help keep peace in the familyif you make financial planning for a move part
of your everyday life.
