Money and Mobility: For Military Personnel and Families
How Do I Transfer My Child to a New School? |
|
When you know where you will be stationed, find out what school district your
child will be in. Personnel at the base housing or family center should be able to
assist you. Contact the future school and ask questions such as:
- Will you accept photocopies of my child’s school records or only “official”
transcripts? If only transcripts, ask the school to contact your current school
and request that the child’s records be sent to them while you are in the
process of moving. Always take photocopies of your child’s records with you.
- What immunizations does my child need?
- Is a physical exam required?
- What health records do I need to provide?
The good news is that many school districts that include military installations
understand the needs of military children. Still, your child may face different
courses or the same courses taught at a different level. To help your child make a successful transition, you may want to set aside $200 to $300 to pay for a temporary tutor or other school-related expenses. For information on supporting
your child’s education and easing the transition, visit the Military K-12 Partners Web site.
