To strengthen the offerings of the NASD Investor Education Foundation's military financial education program, the Foundation has partnered with the Department of Defense, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and other organizations whose expertise in the financial education arena and experience in addressing military audiences complement the Foundation's commitment to providing financial education information and resources to servicemembers and their families.

Key Educational Programs and Partnerships

  • Online Resource Center: SaveAndInvest.org
SaveAndInvest.org serves as a centralized, trusted source for unbiased information on saving and investing, including original content, interactive tools, financial education resources, frequently asked questions and more. This dynamic Web portal, a product of the NASD Foundation, will grow and change over time as new materials are developed and new personal finance concerns are identified. It is unique for its ability to draw together individuals and organizations that are committed to helping members of the military and their families take control of their finances. www.SaveAndInvest.org

  • Military Financial Counselor Investment Education Program
In partnership with the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE), the Foundation has launched a continuing education program designed to enhance the skills of financial counselors and educators who serve U.S. military troops and families. "It's Your Move, A Game Plan for Investing" is a ten-module investor education program that provides in-depth, train-the-trainer education about investing, enabling financial counselors to provide professional investor education to military servicemembers and their families. www.afcpe.org

  • Military Spouse Fellowship for the Accredited Financial CounselorSM Program
In cooperation with the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education® (AFCPE®) and the National Military Family Association (NMFA), the Foundation is training a corps of military spouses to provide financial counseling and education within the military community. Recipients of the Military Spouse Fellowship must commit to not only completing the courses of study, but also working or volunteering in the financial counseling field serving the military for two years. Upon successful completion of the program coursework, testing and experience requirements, spouses will be awarded the Accredited Financial Counselor designation from the AFCPE. The program — open to spouses of active duty or retired Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army or Air National Guard or reserve component servicemembers — is unique in that it not only strengthens the personal financial counseling services available for military families, but also helps military spouses achieve career goals and aspirations by enhancing job-related marketability. www.nmfa.org, www.afcpe.org

  • Military Money
The NASD Foundation is a sponsor of the new "Investing Department" of Military Money, a magazine and corresponding Web site of the InCharge Education Foundation. Published quarterly and distributed through commissaries on military installations, the magazine was designed specifically for the Department of Defense's Financial Readiness Campaign. The NASD Foundation is addressing investor protection and investor education issues through by-lined articles and Web content. www.militarymoney.com

  • Military Families: Money & Mobility
The NASD Foundation collaborated with the National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®) and the National Military Family Association (NMFA) to update and reprint Military Families: Money and Mobility, a publication that helps servicemembers and their families deal with the financial issues surrounding deployment and duty-station changes. In addition to updates, the new version contains information on investing and expanded sections on financial issues surrounding long-term deployment and National Guard and Reserves getting called to active duty. This year, approximately 500,000 copies of the publication are being distributed through partnerships with military installations, family service centers, family readiness groups and investor education events. An online version of the publication is also available on www.SaveAndInvest.org.

  • Military Saves
The Foundation is partnering with the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) to invigorate and enhance Military Saves, a national social marketing campaign designed to encourage and support low- to moderate-income military households to save and build personal wealth. Military Saves is a targeted project of CFA's America Saves campaign. www.americasaves.org

In addition to the educational programs listed above, the NASD Foundation's military financial education project includes research to determine how best to educate and reach the military community, activities and events to motivate families to take responsibility for their financial well-being, and a public outreach campaign to raise awareness of the tools, information and services available to military personnel and their families. The NASD Investor Education Foundation publicly launched the military financial education project in early 2006. For more information, visit www.SaveAndInvest.org.
