A crowd of 500 gathered at the Hawai'i Convention Center April 12 to attend a free financial education forum for military families, presented by the NASD Investor Education Foundation, with co-sponsor Senator Daniel Akaka.
Rear Admiral Michael C. Vitale, Commander Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific welcomed attendees, stressing the importance of saving for the future and avoiding predatory loans and other money drains that can derail financial security.
Bob Glauber, Chairman and CEO of NASD and Chairman of the NASD Investor Education Foundation recognized the teamwork that was involved in making the event a success. In addition to the presence of Senator Akaka, Mr. Glauber recognized the assistance of base Military Family Support Centers, whose efforts to promote the event contributed to the strong turnout. "We received tremendous support from Pearl Harbor Navy Base, Schofield Army Barracks, Ft. Shafter, Hickam Air Force Base, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, and U.S. Coast Guard District 14. You have been true partners in this effort."
Mr. Glauber also thanked the Securities and Exchange Commission, for providing a speaker to address predatory lending, and the Hawaii State Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, whose Commissioner, Corinna Wong, led a seminar on What to Look for in an Investment Advisor.
The Honolulu financial education event was the first stop in a series of forums for servicemembers and their families. From Hawaii, a team from the NASD Investor Education Foundation traveled to bases in Okinawa and Yokosuka, Japan, then on to the USS RONALD REAGAN, deployed in the Persian Gulf.
The NASD Investor Education Foundation continues the roll out of its Military Education Program with forums at the Naval Submarine Base in Kings Bay, Georgia, June 13, 2006.
